Pietro U. Dini is linguist and translator. He studied at the University of Pisa, specialising in Baltic Studies in Lithuania (1983/84), Latvia (1989), Poland (1986/87) and Germany. Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung (1996/97) and W. Bessel-Forschungspreisträger (2003) in Göttingen. He is a member of the Academy of Sciences of Latvia (2004), of the Academy of Sciences of Lithuania (2007) and of the Academy of Science of Göttingen (2010). In 2002 he obtained the Gedimin Ordin by the President of the Republic of Lithuania, in 2006 became Doctor h.c. of the University of Vilnius, and in 2007 the Saint Jerome award for literary translation. Assistant professor for Linguistics in Potenza, professor for Baltiske Språk in Oslo; since 1998/99 professor for Baltic Philology and General Linguistics at the University of Pisa. Visiting professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago, U.C.L.A., Vilnius University. His main interests lie in the fields of comparative historical linguistics and history of Linguistics. His book Le lingue baltiche (Firenze 1997) has been translated in Lithua¬nian (2000), Latvian (2000), Russian (2002) and English (forthcoming). Among his last works are: Studies in Baltic and Indo-European Linguistics in honor of W. R. Schmalstieg (co-authored with Ph. Baldi, Amsterdam-Philadelphia 2004), Baltų filologijos studijos (Vilnius 2010), Aliletoescvr: Linguistica baltica delle origini (Livorno 2010).
