In 1995, Alfonso Femia founded 5 1 where the research on the contemporary city has been carried along with the requalification of urban spaces and significant buildings. The studio, that became 5 1AA architecture agency in 2005, is based on an interdisciplinary relationship that develops itself between the studios of Genoa, Milan and Paris, creating a triangle between cities, cultures and confrontation. Atelier(s) Alfonso Femia (AF517) is, from 2017, the new name of 5 1AA. The idea that the city builds itself through strategic visions capable of bringing together territory and city, public and private, instruments and project, leads Alfonso Femia to the development of numerous and various projects in the main Italian and Mediterranean cities. Alfonso Femia is the co-author of many books published with Ante Prima AAM Editions and Marsilio Editori; among them the monograph Rights & Duties presented during the Venice Biennale in 2014, the Marseilles Docks and Life, new residential quarter in Brescia. In 2015, Alfonso Femia created 500×100 and 500x100Talk: a place where dialog occurs through physical encounter, in the search of glances and words that generate reflections, connections and thoughts when they meet. A way to confront each other on the city, become aware of it and discuss different visions. Alfonso Femia works on the research of matter as a dialog tool with space and light. This research lead him to develop new concepts and products with Castaldi Lighiting, I Guzzini, Martinelli Luci, Erco, Staygreen, Atanor, Casalgrande Padana, Poltrona Frau, Xilo1934. In 2017, he starts the dialog “L’entre-deux” with international writers and architects on the issue of the city and the Mediterranean area. He is invited at the Salone del Mobile di Milano to work on a research on the future workplace 3.0 and presents “The chronotopic system”.
