Gerardo Piña-Rosales

Gerardo Piña-Rosales was born in Cádiz (Spain) in 1948. He studied in the Spanish Institute of Tangier (Morocco), and in the Universities of Granada and Salamanca. He came to the United States in 1973 and has been living in New York since then. He received his B.A. from Queens College of CUNY and his Ph.D. from the Graduate School and University Center. From 1981 to 2017 he taught Spanish literature at Lehman College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He has also taught at St. John´s University and Teachers College-Columbia University. Prof. Piña-Rosales is a Numerary Member and President of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language and Correspondent of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language of Madrid.
Gerardo Piña-Rosales is the author of several books, in which is evident his profound knowledge of Spanish Literature, the Arts, Photography, Philosophy, History, etc. In 1984 he published his first book, From the Celestina to Paraphernalia: Studies in Spanish Theatre. Four years later he published The Short Stories of Manuel Andújar, followed by The Narrative of Serrano Poncela (1999), 1898: Between Disenchantment and Hope (1999), Women´s Literature and the New Millenium (2000), Hispanic Presence in the United States (2003), Spain in the Americas (2004), Odón Betanzos or the Integrity of the Wounded Tree (2005). He has published two novellae: Desde esta cámara oscura and Los amores y desamores de Camila Candelaria, and a book of short-stories, El secreto de Artemisia y otras historias. As an essayist he has written articles on Cervantes, Vallejo, Paul Bowles.
