Dario Ambrosini was born in Rome, Italy, in 1964. He earned his degree in electronic engineering from the Sapienza University of Rome (Italy), defending an experimental thesis about the optical information processing by the Talbot effect and Talbot interferometers (Prof. Franco Gori). He spent two years in the Optics Laboratory of Prof. Gori at the Sapienza University. In 1995 he joined the Department of Energetics (presently DIIIE, Department of Industrial Engineering, Information and Economics) of the University of L'Aquila as an Assistant Professor. Since 1998 he was a Temporary Professor and since October 2006 he is an Associate Professor of Thermal Sciences.
His research interests include flow visualization and heat and mass transfer, optical metrology, non destructive testing, thermography, digital image analysis as well as the history of science and engineering. He is a research scientist associated with The Italian National Institute for the Physics of Matter (INFM), a participant in the European Construction Technology Platform, Focus Area Cultural Heritage and a member of ATI (Associazione Termotecnica Italiana), UIT (Italian Union of Thermal-Fluid Dynamics), OSA (The Optical Society) and SPIE (The International Society for Optics and Photonics). He was a member of IIC (The International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works) between 2004 and 2011. In 2013 he was designated a Senior Member of both OSA and SPIE. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Optics and Lasers in Engineering (Elsevier) and chaired several congress sessions. He was the recipient (with G. Schirripa Spagnolo) of the 2001 SPIE Rudolf Kingslake Medal and Prize. He contributed to the organization of three national workshops devoted to optical methods in Thermal-Fluid Dynamics (2003, 2005 and 2008) and to the editing of the relative proceedings. He was the Guest Editor of three Special Issues of the journal Optics and Lasers in Engineering:
