In 1977 becomes part of the permanent research staff of Istituto Superiore di Sanità (the Italian National Institute of Health) and in 1990 is promoted Research Director; from 1982 he is appointed Head of the Biochemical Toxicology Unit until 2001, when he moves to the European Commission (DG SANCO) as Seconded National Expert (SNE). At the end of the SNE service, in 2005, he get a contract as senior consultant in the Italian Ministry of Health until 2008, when he joins the National Centre for Rare Diseases (Istituto Superiore di Sanità) as Head of the Unit “Prevention, Surveillance, Formation and Information” until retirement. In 2001, based on the evaluation of his achievements, he was registered in the Italian National Registry of Certified Toxicologists (RENTIC).
