Staniforth Ricketson

Staniforth Ricketson graduated in Law and arts from the University of Melbourne and holds the degrees of master and soctor of Laws from the University of London. He is also a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia and of the Australian Academy of Law. Prior to his appointment to the University of Melbourne in november 2000, he was the Sir Keith Aickin professor of Commercial law at Monash University (from 1991 to 2000), and before this held academic positions at the University of Melbourne and in the Centre for Commercial Law Studies–Queen Mary University of London. More recently, he has been a visitor at the University of Cambridge, the National University of Singapore, Wuhan Law School in China, the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, London, the Dickson Poon Law School, King’s College London, and Columbia Law School, New York. He will become a professor emeritus at Melbourne Law School from april 2019. He has written, taught and advised widely in all areas of intellectual property law, and has held various professional as well as governmental appointments in Australia, including membership of the Commonwealth Copyright Tribunal and as a consultant to the Australian Law Reform Commission. He is currently a panel member of the World Intellectual Property Organisation’s dispute resolution body in relation to domain names and was a member of the Victorian Law Reform Commission from 2001 to 2010. Between 2000 and 2015, he practised part–time at the Victorian Bar and was counsel or co–counsel in a number of leading Australian IP cases, both at first instance and on appeal.
