Uma Suthersanen
Uma Suthersanen holds degrees in law from the National University of Singapore (LL.B) and Queen Mary University of London (LLM and PhD). She held a Herchel Smith fellowship, and a Financial Times Law & Tax fellowship at Queen Mary University of London, before being permanently appointed as a lecturer in 2001, and became, in 2009, a professor in International intellectual property law at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies. She is also a co–director of the Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute, and an academic co–director of the LLM in Intellectual property law programme. She is the current editor of Sweet & Maxwell’s European Copyright and Design Report, and a founding/current editor of Queen Mary Studies in Intellectual Property. She is a specialist editor on EU Copyright Law in Copinger & Skone–James on Copyright (Sweet & Maxwell, 17th Edition, 1st Supplement, 2018). She has served as a consultant and given evidence to various UN organisations, governments and legislators, including the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the Governments of Israel and Singapore. Her works have been cited extensively. She is a visiting overseas fellow of the Intellectual Property Academy of Singapore. She is/has been in various British and international committees including: executive committee of the British Literary and Artistic Copyright Association (chairman from 2006-2010; vice–chairman from 2010-2013); executive committee member of the Association Litteraire et Artistique Internationale (2006-2016); British Copyright Council (copyright and technology working group, 2004-2012); British Computer Society (legal advisory committee, 2004-2011); working group on trade and intellectual property, Geneva Trade & Development Forum on Inclusive Globalization (2007-2008); Institute for Public Policy Research (advisory board, 2006-2007); AHRB Copyright Research Network, Birkbeck, London (core member, 2004-2007); and the Creative Commons (England & Wales) (legal advisory board, 2004-2010). She has been a visiting professor to institutions around the world, including University of Southampton, University of Essex, Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Bogota), Université Robert Schuman (Strasbourg 3), University of Ankara (on the World Intellectual Property Organization LLM programme), University of Western Ontario (Canada), Ss. Cyril and Methodius University (Macedonia), and University of Washington, (USA). She has been interviewed and quoted in various international media including the «International Herald Tribune», the «Guardian» and on BBC Radio 4 (Law in Action). She has published over 70 works.
