Francesca Capano

Francesca Capano is  professor of History of Architecture at DiARC, University of Naples Federico II, PhD in History and Criticism of Architecture.

She has taught and continues to teach History of Architecture and History of Cities and Territories (from ancient to contemporary times) in various courses at the University of Naples since 2002, and as a tenured lecturer since 2017. She has participated in numerous national and international research groups, including: Naples Digital Archive. Moving Through Time and Space, CIRICE-Biblioteca Hertziana (2018-2020). She is currently involved in the FORMA URBIS NEAPOLIS research project. Genesis and structure of the Ancient City, CIRICE-Fondazione Banco Napoli-University of Naples Federico II (since 2020).

She has participated in many national and international conferences, most recently: AISU Turin 2022 Adaptive cities through the post-pandemic lens, coordinating the session Cities of ancient foundation in Europe. Genesis of the forma urbis and the historical image of the urban landscape (with A. Buccaro), report The view of Partenope and Neapolis by Maresca, Buzzi and de Grado.

She is the author of more than 150 essays, including monographs, articles and essays, notably: Il Sito Reale di Capodimonte, Naples: Federico II University Press - fedOA Press (2017); La Piazza Reale di Caserta, in “Città & Storia”, year XIV, nos. 1-2 (2019);

His main areas of interest are: the history of architecture and the city of Naples and the Kingdom in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly Bourbon architecture and the urban development of Naples and Caserta; the history of modern architecture, with reference to the role of architects and engineers between the 16th and 17th centuries; the history of modern and contemporary architecture, with a particular focus on the recognisable characteristics of Mediterranean architecture; historical iconography, with reference to the study of cities and architecture on an urban scale; the historical and evolutionary analysis of territories and landscapes, supported by the use of digital graphics technology.

She participates and has participated in secretariats and scientific committees. Since 2018, she has been co-director of the open access series History and Iconography of European Architecture, Cities and Sites on the SeReNa platform of FedOA - Federico II University Press. She is a member of research institutes and scientific associations in the field.
