Francesco Moscato

Francesco Moscato is currently employed as an Assistant Professor at the Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, Medical University of Vienna (Austria). He studied at the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Calabria, Rende (Italy) and graduated in 2004 with distinction. For his master thesis he spent six months at the Dept. of Informatics, Systems and Production, University of Tor Vergata, Rome (Italy) working on cardiovascular hydraulic simulators, their characterization and control. In 2008 he received the PhD with distinction at the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Calabria, Rende (Italy). He spent for his doctoral studies 13 months at the (former) Center for Biomedical Engineering and Physics, Medical University of Vienna (Austria). His dissertation focused on the interaction between the cardiovascular system and rotary blood pumps, both in numerical simulations and in animal experiments. This work was awarded in 2008 with the Young Researcher Scholarship of the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps. At the Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering in Vienna he continues his research on rotary blood pumps with experimental focus on swine isolated-heart studies and clinical focus on diagnostics of cardiac function in rotary blood pump recipients. In particular his passionate efforts are directed towards a better understanding of reverse remodeling and recovery processes in the failing heart from a biomechanical point of view. He has been continuously involved, with enthusiasm, in didactical activities both at the University of Calabria (Italy) and at the Medical University of Vienna (Austria). Undergraduate as well as postgraduate students play in his personal and professional life an important role, since he considers teaching a bi-directional process where both teacher and student shall gain knowledge and experience. He is currently a board member of the European Society for Artificial Organs and of the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps. Francesco is an amateur guitar & flute player, who also likes to record live gigs with friends and to put his “hands-on” electroacoustic toys. Beside other hobbies he is a passionate traveler to experience, by first-hand, the diversity of cultures worldwide
