Vittorio Mainetti
Vittorio Mainetti earned a PhD in international law from the Graduate Institute of International and development Studies, Geneva and the University of Milan. He works as an Adjoint scientifique at the University of Geneva. He is also a visiting lecturer at the University of Saint-Etienne (France), and the coordinator of the International Law Seminar at the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Specializing in public international law, Dr. Mainetti is particularly interested in the history of international law and the law of international cultural relations and cultural heritage protection. His doctoral dissertation, entitled “L'intérêt culturel internationalement protégé. Contribution à l'étude du droit international de la culture, was devoted to the study of Culture Heritage Law. He is the author of several scientific publications on various issues related to the protection of cultural heritage. From 2000 to 2005, as member of the Italian governmental delegation, he took part in the UNESCO negotiations that led to the adoption of latest international UNESCO conventions on the protection of heritage cultural: the 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and, finally, the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. Since 2004, he actively collaborates with the French CNRS (Paris) to research projects dealing with cultural heritage law. In 2009, he participated in the Research Centre of the Hague Academy of International Law on cultural diversity. His contribution has been published by Martinus Nijhoff in the series The Law Books of the Academy.
