Matilda Ann Butkas Ertz

Matilda Ertz teaches music history, piano, and harpsichord at the University of Louisville School of Music. She has a PhD in Musicology from the University of Oregon, as well as Master of Music degrees in both Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Illinois. Matilda Ertz studies music and dance, particularly ballet music in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She has published on George Balanchine in The Cambridge Companion to Ballet and on Schneitzhoeffer’s score to Taglioni La Sylphide in La Sylphide - 1832 and beyond. Her dissertation “Nineteenth-century Italian Ballet Music before National Unification: Sources, style and context”, covers uncharted territory in music and dance scholarship.
