Joan Haig is currently a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the Centre of African Studies (CAS) in the University of Edinburgh. After completing her doctoral thesis in CAS in 2011, Joan worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies, researching Scottish missionaries in Northern Rhodesia/Zambia. Sections of her thesis have been published in the journal «History in Africa» and as part of an edited volume (Living the End of Empire: Politics and Society in Late Colonial Zambia, Brill), as well as being presented at conferences. Her main research interests are in ethnic and racial minorities, minority identity and activities, diaspora, migration and transnationalism, Zambian history and society, postcolonial race relations, settler identity construction and birth and belonging. Joan is also a Founding Editor of the Lembani Trust, a publishing charity based in Lusaka, Zambia.
