Worked in different youth and social organisations in Germany, including the German Red Cross (1989-1995). Since 1995 at the European Commission, initially in DG V (Employment and Social Affairs), then in DG Health and Consumers, working on health policy and strategy, later on environmental health determinants. 2005-2012 Head of Unit for Health Determinants, with responsibility for nutrition and physical activity, addictions (alcohol and drugs), as well as social and environmental determinants of health. Since January 2013 Head of Unit with responsibility for the EU Health programme, and chronic diseases, including cancer, mental health and wellbeing, and rare diseases.
