Alex H. Johnstone

Alex H. Johnstone in professor of Inorganic chemistry and Emeritus Professor of Science education since 1988.He was Director of the Centre for Science Education since 1989 to1998 and Foundation Director of Teaching and Learning Service since 1994 to 1997.He holds Senior Academic Appointments at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.Principal Appointments: Chemistry Master at George Watsons College Edinburgh (1956-1962), Head of Chemistry at the High School of Stirling (1962-1969), principal examiner in Chemistry for the Scottish Examination Board (1967-1972), Designer and Developer of all the Chemistry Syllabuses for schools in Scotland and author of all the supporting textbooks and training materials for teachers (1960-1967) Member of staff in the Chemistry Department of the University of Glasgow (Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor in Inorganic Chemistry with special interest in Bio-Inorganic Chemistry, 1969-1998)Other appointments: Vice-president, Royal Society of Chemistry, London; President of the Education Division, Royal Society of Chemistry, London; Member of the British Committee on Chemical Education, Royal Society, London.Academic Awards and honours: Nyholm Medal, Royal Society of Chemistry, London and Bronze Medal, Finnish Society of Teachers of Maths and Science (1979), David Mellor Memorial Medal, University of New South Wales, Australia (1987), Gabriel Illuminati Gold Medal, Italian Chemical Society (1991), Titular Professor in the Verhaegen Memorial Chair, Limburg University, Belgium (1992), Brasted Medal, American Chemical Society (1996), The Annual FECS Lectureship, Federation of European Chemical Societies, Budapest (1997), The Galen 2000 Lectureship, Dublin, The Republic of Ireland (2000), American Chemical Society Award (Salt Lake City) (2009).Research: supervised the Doctoral Studies of 80 students (1970-2001), published 220 Academic books and papers (see short bibliography), joint research projects with overseas universities in France, Belgium, USA, Australia, South Africa, Singapore.Research fields of interest: Information Processing, Assessment, Attitude Development, Laboratory Work, Language in Science, Problem Solving in Science.Selected Publications: Alex H.
