Nadan Petrović is professor of Strategies of International Cooperation at “La Sapienza” University of Rome and of Legislation and migration policies at University of Salento (Lecce).
He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Law at University of Sarajevo in 1990 and at University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1997, as well as a Master’s Degree in International Protection of Human Rights at “La Sapienza” in 1998. In 2010 he obtained the title of PhD in History of Europe (with thesis in “History of Asylum in Italy since Constitution form 1948, in light of process of harmonization of EU policies in asylum”). His main areas of teaching and research are migration and asylum governance with particular attention to the historical-institutional evolution of the management of the phenomenon at an international, EU and national level.
During his professional career he also covered several high ranking positions within Italian national institutions and European and international organizations, such as: Director of the Central Service of the Italian National System for Protection of Asylum Seekers and Refugees (SPRAR); Senior Specialist for Integration of Migrants/Head of Sid Unit at International Organization for Migration - Coordinating Office for the Mediterranean countries; Head of UNHCR/UNOPS Implementing Unit c/o National Asylum Program (Program on reception, integration and voluntary repatriation of asylum seekers and refugees in Italy established by the Ministry of Interior, the UNHCR and the National Association of Italian Municipalities); Advisor to the Italian Undersecretary of State for Internal Affairs in charge for Immigration, to the Head Department for Civil Liberties and Immigration of the Italian Ministry of Interior, to the Director General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to the Parliamentary commission of inquiry into the reception system for migrants; Manager and expert of the Presidency of the Council of Minister (Ministry of Integration and National Office on racial antidiscrimination); Rapporteur of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (on Migration flows in South Eastern Europe). In addition to above, he has worked as senior consultant for European Commission (in quality of a Team Leader and a member of the team in charge for technical assistance to the Republic of Serbia, Russian Federation, Republic of Moldova and Republic of Montenegro).
He is author of almost fifty publications on migration and refugee issues (including several monographic works). He is also regularly teaching at Degree, Master’s and PhD courses of other Italian and foreign universities.
