Alberto Guadagnini

Prof. Alberto Guadagnini (Politecnico di Milano, Milano, Italy) is Professor of Hydraulic Engineering and Head of the Hydraulic Engineering Section of the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICA) at the Politecnico di Milano, Milano, Italy. He is also Adjunct Professor at the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources, The University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, USA. He has been Professeur Invité at the University of Strasbourg (Strasbourg, France) in 2010, Visiting Professor at the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources, The University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, USA, in 1997, and 2010 - 2016, and Visiting Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences and EnergyResearch, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel, in 2011.
He has published more than 130 research papers in ISI rated, international, peer-reviewed journals, 90 of them over the last 10 years (published >100 conference proceedings and abstracts; Total of > 2000 citations; h-index (ISI WoS) - May 2016: 25). He is the leader of the Groundwater Hydrology group at DICA (current composition: 2 full professors, 1 Assistant Professor, 3 post-doctoral fellows, and 4 Doctoral students), which was ranked at the highest level in the context of the most recent (2010) international peer-review assessment of the Politecnico di Milano. The group has coordinated numerous base and applied research projects at national and international levels (including EU-funded activities). The partnership of the group includes both research and academic institutions and industrial partners, including eni S.p.A. and SMEs.
Guadagnini focuses his research on subsurface flow dynamics of (variably) saturated soils, hydrology of fractured rocks, parameter estimation, inverse modeling, geostatistics, stochastic analyses of flow and transport of solutes in geo-chemically active subsurface environments, scaling in hydrology and geophysics, data assimilation, model reduction techniques for the solution of stochastic flow and transport problems. He contributed to the development of exact and approximated formalisms for prediction of groundwater flow fields and transport processes governing the spreading of conservative and reactive solutes in heterogeneous reservoirs by means of conditional moments of the state variable of interest.
He has significant expertise in the characterization of porous media associated with heterogeneous patterns distributed on multiple scales affecting flow and transport processes. Recent research activity of Alberto Guadagnini focuses on the analysis of scaling behavior of earth and environmental variables, inverse modeling, well hydraulics, and uncertainty quantification in groundwater systems. Ongoing research projects include statistical scaling of hydrological quantities, stochastic groundwater hydrology, delineation of wellhead protection regions, multiscale flow and solute transport in porous media, multiphase flows and enhanced oil recovery.
He is Executive Editor of the Journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences, and Associate Editor of the Journals Water Resources Research and StochasticEnvironmental Research and Risk Assessment.
