Carpenter for ten years, then musical instrument maker for another ten years, Richard O’Donovan started studying mathematics at Fields medal limit age. Teaching introductory analysis — or calculus — lead to studying nonstandard approaches to see if there were more intuitive, yet mathematically correct ways of presenting the subject.
