Ivan Bernal is a designer and educator. He holds a Master’s Degree from Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) where he graduated with honors and was awarded Best Thesis for his research between primitive shapes and familiarity. In 2011 He was selected to be part of the Wallpaper Magazine Graduate Directory.
Currently an Assistant Professor at Syracuse School of Architecture. Ivan has served as a full-time faculty at SCI-Arc and has taught seminars and lectured in a variety of schools including Harvard GSD, Yale SOA, Knowlton School of Architecture at OSU, IAAC in Barcelona, and INDA Bangkok, among others.
His professional experience expands over twelve years including studios in South America and The United States. From 2012 to 2016 he was the Lead Designer for the Los Angeles based studio Xefirotarch. His work has been exhibited in galleries around the world, and his research sits at the intersection between formal familiarity and nontraditional representational techniques.
The research investigates the use of platonic shapes to produce recognizable geometric explorations and generate speculations about alternate realities. The work looks to create and extrapolate on familiarity as an agent of new aesthetics through the lens of new modes of representation.
