Born 4 June 1941 in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Doctor in Physics, University of Bologna, 5 December 1963. Visiting scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, 1969-70. From 1970 to 1986 he serves as Professor of Physics, Thermodynamics and Geophysics at the University of Modena. From July 1967 scientist of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) where he stays up to 11 March 1987, when he becomes Full Professor of General Physics, teaching Experimental Physics, at the University of Ferrara, position that he actually holds. In charge of CNR hail project (1970) and Director of CNR Observatory for the study of thunderstorms and hail (1971-75). Head of Clouds and Precipitation Section of FISBAT from 1977. Member of the Cloud Physics Commission of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics (IAMAP), 1976-84 and 1988- now. Director of Institute FISBAT, 1 September 1985-31 December 1993. Coordinator of the Board of Directors of CNR Institutes of the Bologna area, 1986-93 and nominated President of Bologna Research Area by the President of CNR from 1991. Starting from 2002 he is Director of Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate of CNR. Prof. Prodi started his research activity in solid state physics during the university studies. Since his military service in the Air Force Meteorological Service he has always conducted research in atmospheric physics.
