Provost (vice rettore) at Southern Virginia University. He received his doctorate from Harvard University and has published on a variety of topics related to the Italian epic tradition from Dante to Tasso, Giordano Bruno, and the romantic ballet. With his wife, Debra Sowell, they are among the foremost private collectors of pre-20th-century theatrical dance prints.
