After completing a five-year engineering degree in only three years, Mats Leijon was awarded the John Ericsson Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement in 1984. He later defended his doctoral thesis on high voltage engineering and began working for ABB, where he masterminded a number of significant innovations.
In 2000, he was appointed Professor of Engineering Physics focusing on electrical studies at Uppsala University. His work at Uppsala has resulted in a number of new solutions for producing energy from renewable resources. Leijon has also launched several companies in this area, including Seabased, Vertical Wind, Current Power and Electric Line AB.
