James Martin Farrar

James Martin Farrar is a Full Professor of Chemistry at the Chemistry Department of University of Rochester, NY (USA), since 1986. After his Ph.D. on 1974 at University of Chicago (with Prof. Yan-tseh Lee, Nobel Prize in Chemistry on 1986), he was a PostDoc (1974-1976) at University of California – Berkeley, USA (with Prof. Bruce H. Mahan). From 1997 to 2000 he was Chemistry Department Chair at University of Rochester. He was visiting Professor in a number of Universities in USA and Europe. He got many awards: Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, 1985; Goergen Award for Excellence and Artistry in Undergraduate Teaching, 2005; Students’ Association Professor of the Year Award, 2006. The research of the Farrar group focuses on the reaction dynamics and photochemistry of ionic species. The objectives of these studies are to elucidate the reactivity of isolated gas phase species important in combustion, atmospheric and interstellar chemistry. Recently, he was able to study, for the first time, ion-radical reactions by using crossed molecular beams and ion-imaging techniques.
